Apple iPhone is all about innovation, not invention
Tech Dirt has written a great article about how the iPhone is all about innovation, not invention:
These two quotes sum up their thinking:
Invention is the practice of coming up with something new. Innovation, however, is delivering something new to a market that wants it.
and
the iPhone is a fantastic piece of innovation that really has very little new in it.
I have no problem with this (though it would be easy to take that second quote out of context). Apple researched and developed the phone, based on existing inventions. We all know that the touchscreen isn't new (yes, LG, I'm looking at you), but so what?
Apple's original Mac operating system wasn't invented - it was taken and developed from Xerox. Why should the principles behind the design of the iPhone be any different?
From the plethora of rumours and column inches written about the iPhone, it's obvious that Apple have a product that a lot of people want. That's innovation.
