Apple may face another lawsuit from Quantum Research over iPhone's touch screen technology
Apple, already in hot water with UK-based Qauntum Research (QR) over technology used in the iPod nano click wheel, may face another challenge - the touch screen being used on the iPhone.
Based only on public demonstrations and descriptions, QR has concluded that Apple must be using some of its patented technologies without permission.
"We will be looking very carefully at the iPhone," a QR representative told Electronics Weekly magazine.
Aren't we all?
"The description of the iPhone suggests it uses a rear-surface touch screen, and has proximity sensing which can tell if it is held to the ear. That's a QR capability," said QR's licensing director Duncan Bryan.
Although there are other technologies available for capacitive touch sensing, they are deemed less reliable in consumer devices that must withstand outdoor conditions.
