iPhone sets the standard for the mobile industry to aim at
Edgar Bronfman Jr, CEO of Warner Music Group, told mobile lovers at last week's 3GSM conference in Barcelona that the iPhone could force the industry to make better looking and easier to use handsets.
"Before it's even hit the market it has raised the bar in terms of what users expect with a user interface and what music phones should do," he said. "Now it's up to other mobile phone makers to meet users' expectations. "For those who invent with a similarly inspiring vision, the opportunity is immense."
Manufacturers will need to take another look at their designs and feature lists if they are to capitalise on mobile music and entertainment services.
That may be the theory, but according to Nancy Gohring at PC Advisor, a look around 3GSM shows that isn't happening:
I took a quick stroll around the show floor... checking out the music phones from some of the biggest handset makers out there to see if anything might compare to the hype around the iPhone. Apple is known for great hardware designs and simple, intuitive user interfaces. While I saw a dizzying array of form factors and a multitude of user interface styles, I was unimpressed by the hardware I saw and downright confounded by the complexity of all the user interfaces.
Maybe she didn't look at the LG KE850 - maybe she did. Plenty of the iPhone's rivals will tell you that they have feature x or feature y too, and that their system is better, and available now, but when all is said and done, there's only one iPhone.
