More on the Cisco Apple fiasco: blame the fans
Despite the details of the recent Apple/Cisco iPhone agreement being confidential, that hasn't stopped speculation about exactly why Cisco would 'roll over' and let Apple away with the name.
Roger Kay of Endpoint Technologies says that although it's hard to see which company has come out on top, it seems like a 'face-saving' agreement for Cisco.
Independent technology analyst Rob Enderle felt that Cisco 'caved'.
Ultimately, might it have been Apple fans that sealed the original name? Yahoo reports that "long before it had an official name, Apple fans dubbed it the iPhone. That's because many Apple products begin with an "i", including the iPod music player and iTunes music store."
Did Apple name the iPhone completely of their own accord, or did they name it based on what the rumourmongers were saying?
"It looks like Cisco got shafted. Maybe there's something in the (undisclosed) terms, but I don't see how they're getting the good end of the deal," said Kay.
