Steve Jobs talked tough to get Apple's own way with iPhone
Steve Jobs may come across as the super-friendly, jovial host at his Keynote addresses, but it appears that he can talk tough when he wants to.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Jobs has often referred to telecoms operators as 'orifices' that phone manufacturers and other companies have to go through to get to the customer.
Steve reckons that wireless operators are just 'commodities' with no hope of understanding the web and entertainment industry the same way Apple does. Bold.
Whilst this attitude might not get mere mortals very far, we're talking about Steve Jobs here. Though other operators shunned him, he was obviously persuasive enough to get Cingular to agree to no branding on the phone body, no proprietary software, and a share of the monthly revenue.
For three hours, Mr. Jobs played with the device, with its touch-screen that allows users to view contacts, dial numbers and flip through photos with the swipe of a finger. Mr. Sigman [Cingular CEO] looked on in awe, according to a person familiar with the meeting.
Maybe that had something to do with it.
