iPhone easy target for April Fool jokes
With eBay scams, erroneous launch plans, and impromptu sightings already rife, it's hardly surprising that the iPhone was an easy subject to inject some 1st April tomfoolery into.
Fortunately, because 1st April this year fell on a Sunday, the impact was perhaps lessened. The truth/rumour (you decide, no-one else can) of the 11th June release date broke before the weekend, so unless it was mistimed, that's not Foolish.
How about Madonna being the first iPhone user (besides Steve, that is). Well, that broke on Friday, and the pictures suggest it was an iPod anyway.
Much more likely to be in Fool territory is the 'news' that Yahoo is to release the yPhone. Yes, we've heard all about a possible Google phone but even that's more likely to be about mobile software, not hardware. Yahoo are working with Apple to provide email services, and whilst that doesn't rule out competition, it's too fishy to be true.
Like any decent April Fool joke, the story starts plausibly enough:
Apparently the yPhone will be designed around a central portal service allowing users to surf the web from a desktop page styled much like the online Yahoo homepage. Users will make calls and send messages by clicking on links from the Yahoo homepage and the whole experience of the phone will be similar to the current Yahoo online pages.
OK, I didn't say it sounded good, just plausible.
Then we get on to:
Yahoo hasn't ignored the demand for multimedia features and has included an application to play music and videos. Thanks to HSDPA Yahoo are offering free streaming of a variety of content from a special, mobile only, service called yTunes.
To cap it all, the product screenshot is an iPhone with superimposed Yahoo content.
Thanks Pinocchio, you Photoshop expert. I can see your nose!
I'm sure there were more (beyond the basic "I've got an iPhone" ruse). If you've seen 'em, let us know in the comments below.
