iPhone without contract to cost nearly a grand?
As rumours go, this is a stinger. Tekno Junkie has it on good authority (you know, the writer's cousin was told something by two Cingular store employees) that an out-of-contract iPhone will cost between $899 and $999.
That's an extraordinary amount of money - an amount I don't believe Apple would stipulate it be sold for.
In any case, we won't be seeing an iPhone free from an AT&T contract for two years, by which time the price is likely to have dropped anyway.
A free iPhone in Europe doesn't seem likely either.

That's ridiculous. $999! I would simply cancel my existing contract for $175, plus the cost of the iPhone w/ 2 year agreement, and still be under the $999 price.
