Sony's PSP could become a mobile phone and an iPhone threat
Today, BT and Sony announced a new deal that will see the PlayStation Portable (PSP) become a mobile phone.
BT and Sony have joined forces to add wireless broadband communications functions, which will include handheld video calls, voice calls and messaging, initially integrating BT Broadband video and voice ‘softphone’ products already available today. In the following months, additional features will be launched to enable calls and messages to PCs, fixed lines and mobiles.
Does this have the potential to be an iPhone killer? Stuart questions the whole notion that a games console should try to be anything else.
Though some will call the iPhone a glorified video iPod, it has been designed with mobile phone functionality in mind. Sony's deal with BT takes an existing product and tries to add communications features that it wasn't initially designed to handle. It all feels a bit uncomfortable.
The PSP isn't an iPhone killer - in fact I don't think it'll kill any half-decent multimedia phone. Interesting idea, but I'm not convinced existing PSP users actually want this new feature set, and it's not much of an enticement for gaining new users.
