Thought the Apple/AT&T exclusive period was TWO years? No, it's FIVE
Bad news for those who really didn't like the exclusive deal struck between AT&T and Apple over the iPhone.
Originally announced as a two-year exclusive deal, it now appears that the deal extends for five years.
That's almost an eternity in the fast-paced world of mobile phones, and it effectively means that anyone in the US who refuses to sign up with AT&T can forget the possibility of ever owning an iPhone.
If this strategy works, it could see a lot more customers and revenue for AT&T. If it fails, it could see a backlash against both companies. Of course, the dedicated fans will buy it no matter what, but how about those who quite like the look of the iPhone, but have no qualms about getting something else if they can't get an iPhone?
Unsurprisingly, AT&T are pleased at the moment: “I’m glad we have (the iPhone) in our bag. Others will try to match it, but for a period of time, they’re going to be playing catch-up,” said CEO, Stan Sigman.
It raises questions over what will happen in the UK and other markets. Will Apple seek the same lengthy exclusive deal with a mobile operator here?
