ARM CEO claims iPhone will ignite smartphone use
He's not the first to speak out on the iPhone's good effect on the whole smartphone industry, but CEO of ARM Holdings, Warren East, believes that the iPhone will do for smart phones what the iPod did for digital music players.
If the iPhone proves to be a hit, smart phone sales could double this year. "Within the next few years, smart phones will make up half the mobile phone market," he said at Computex yesterday.
Demand for Internet access on the move will fuel this, particularly once people see how easy it is to browse the Web using the iPhone.
ARM would gain from this, because processing cores are in around 95% of smart phones, and their chips may well end up in the iPhone. I'm sure someone with plenty of money will crack an iPhone open when they get hold of it, to see just what's inside.
