Google Gears should be coming to iPhone
Google Gears, a browser plug-in (currently in beta) that allows web-based applications to run even when not connected to the Internet, is likely to come to Safari - and thus, the iPhone - in the near future.
Currently available for Internet Explorer and Firefox, Google has stated that a Safari version is coming soon.
While this doesn't guarantee that Gears will work on the iPhone, because it would still require authorisation from Apple, the close alliance between the two companies would make it a strong possibility.
Wi-Fi isn't ubiquitous, and users would want to be able to sue some web-based apps when offline, even if they have an unlimited data plan.
In any case, Gears is some way off being implemented on a live, consumer platform. "Google Gears is currently an early-access developers' release. It is not yet intended for use by real users in production applications at this time."
