Music industry fearing "iPhone effect"
According to a recent news report, music industry executives are fearing that the iPhone may give Apple too much clout in the online and mobile music arena.
According to Nielsen Soundscan, sales of CDs fell 20% in 2007 over the previous year, while digital music sales are gradually claiming a greater portion of the business. Some executives believe the iPhone will speed up that process, although JupiterResearch's recent study may suggest otherwise.
"It is going to change the way people think about their mobile from being a fringe portable entertainment device to everyone recognising that this is a really desirable mainstream device," said Barney Wragg, global head of digital for EMI Group's recorded music unit, the world's third-largest record company.
One thing that may stop the iPhone becoming a runaway success for mobile music sales is that it won't offer over-the-air downloading of music to begin with, though Apple could add that functionality later on.
