Analyst: first European iPhone will work over EDGE
A Gartner analyst, Carolina Milanesi, believes that the first European iPhones will work over the EDGE network, just as they currently do in the US.
According to her Taiwanese sources, it's "common knowledge".
Whether this is a problem will come down to how Europeans decide to use the iPhone, she said. If most users treat it like an iPod, adding multimedia content by synchronising to their PC, and using the Internet only when in Wi-Fi hotspots, then the lack of 3G may not be such a problem.
She suggested that the first European iPhone could come as early as October, with a 3G version coming in March next year.
Of course, Apple are likely to keep any such details a closely guarded secret.
She also noted that the cultural differences between Europe and the US would make it unlikely that people would queue for three days to buy an iPhone.
I'm sure some will.
