DVD Jon hacks an iPhone to set it free from AT&T
According to various reports around the Net, DVD Jon (Jon Lech Johansen, so called because he cracked CSS protection on DVDs) has cracked the activation process for the iPhone so that many of its functions can be used without the need for registration with AT&T or Apple.
It's fine so long as you don't want to use it as a phone on any network - which might not be too much of a hardship, particularly if someone also works out how to get services such as Skype working over Wi-Fi.
Apparently the process is not for the faint-hearted, and it's probably going to screw up any hope of making the iPhone "legitimate" again - voiding warranties, and missing out on juicy free updates that are supposed to be coming soon.
