Expert claims high wireless costs are blocking a Canadian iPhone
According to Michael Geist, Canada research chair of Internet and e-commerce law at the University of Ottawa, the main reason the iPhone hasn't been released in Canada yet is because of the high cost of wireless access.
"The barrier to the iPhone in Canada is not Apple," he wrote on his blog, "Rather, it is the lack of wireless competition that ... leads to pricing that places Canadians at a significant disadvantage compared with other developed countries."
He believes that the iPhone is a "game changer" because it relies so heavily on data, and doesn't believe it's practical to have an iPhone in Canada at present due to the uncompetitive nature of Rogers Communications' pricing.
"I don't see how you can have an iPhone with the pricing structure that they're offering," he said.
Some industry watchers expect that the iPhone could make it to Canada in the last quarter of the year.
