Hacking the iPhone: Who'll unlock it first?
Everyone knows that AT&T isn't the best network - even Steve, apparently - so it's not surprising that there's a rush to see who can unlock the iPhone first, giving it the freedom to be used anywhere.
A number of forum threads have been set up at hacking communities, including Hackintosh and the iPhone Dev Wiki (link withheld by request).
Someone could have come up with a solution already, though there could be complications.
No lock is unbreakable, but Apple and AT&T appear to have put some fairly strong systems in place.
The iPhone's SIM card is not standard, but custom built, so no other SIM card will work, unmodified, with it.
The iPhone will likely have to be cracked open in order to access the chips, read the data that's on them, and then interpret that.
The iPhone is registered and activated via iTunes, so it's not just AT&T that you have to get past, but Apple. This all locks the iPhone to one person.
Some features won't work on an unlocked iPhone on another carrier - eg Visual Voicemail.
When Apple brings out free iPhone updates, it might be hard or impossible to install them.
That won't deter those that strive for an open iPhone to continue pushing. It's a fairly expensive pastime, though.
