Survey: most mobile phone users primarily talk and text. iPhone to encourage mobile Internet?
Research from Interpublic Group's Initiative suggests that most mobile phone users primarily use their phones to make voice calls and send text messages.
Listening to music on a mobile phone is also becoming more popular, but activities such as surfing the Net and checking email are still minority activities.
Only 5% of mobile device owners use them to view video clips, with 18% checking email, accessing the Net, or downloading games. These figures are only slightly up on last year's results.
Apple will surely be hoping that the iPhone will start a new trend of Internet usage, as will software developers of such applications as mobile mapping and navigation, directories, mobile gaming, and so on.
It's something that Martin Wilson from Yell.com believes will happen in Europe when the iPhone launches.
Unlimited data plans will certainly encourage users to spend more time online, though slow network speeds don't help matters.
