UK-based UniquePhones company claims it's close to unlocking iPhone
Though "DVD Jon" has already claimed an iPhone hack allowing it to be used without a connection to AT&T, it renders it unable to make phone calls.
For those who wish to use the iPhone as a phone, but with other providers, a UK-based company, UniquePhones, claims that it is very close to unlocking the iPhone so that it can be used with any SIM card, and any provider.
Its founder, John McLaughlin, says that his company has received over 150,000 inquiries already - that's easily 25% of those who've bought an iPhone.
He believes that there is a two-step process to unlocking the iPhone, and thinks the key to cracking it is to break the encryption used by Apple to protect the token that is sent during the iTunes activation process.
Even if a hack is discovered, Apple is highly likely to lock down the method used in subsequent software and hardware updates.
