Vodafone makes an issue of 3G iPhone for Europe
Vodafone has raised concerns over the iPhone, with Arun Sarin, Chief Executive, saying that he looked forward to a model that could use 3G or HSDPA networks in Europe.
"It's clearly a good, software-driven device, but we're concerned about wideband area coverage so that 3G (third-generation) or HSDPA (upgraded 3G) connectivity with the iPhone is something that we look forward to," he said.
Naturally, Sarin wouldn't comment on any potential deal to distribute the iPhone in Europe, but it would be interesting to know the motive for the speech, made as part of Vadafone's quarterly figures announcement.
It could be a veiled way of suggesting that Vodafone, who at one time were analysts' favourite to secure a European deal, has done a deal with Apple. Or it could be propaganda to show that Vodafone, knowing they've lost the iPhone, aren't bothered because it's not a 3G device.
Expect plenty more speculation, and no certainty whatsoever.
