Apple can update iPhone remotely over-the-air
According to Into Mobile, Apple is able to update the iPhone's software remotely. In other words, users don't have to synchronise their phones with iTunes in order for updates to occur.
They've cited Knowledge Base article #306272 on Apple's support site, which doesn't specifically mention OTA updates, but possibly implies it via the following paragraph:
If the Send to Web Gallery option does not appear on iPhone, and you have installed iPhone Software 1.0.1 or later, press the Home button to exit Photos, wait an hour before you tap Photos, and then try again.
It would be interesting to know whether this will only be used for small updates, and whether it happens completely invisibly to the user, or some alert appears on screen.
It could also be a way for Apple to disable hacks without the user ever having to connect to iTunes, although if it relies on the AT&T network and the iPhone has been unlocked for use on other networks, that might not be possible.
We might be running before we can walk on this one - it could be a simple trigger rather than allowing full-blown software updates. We'll wait to see if any more information emerges on this on.
