iPhoneSimFree iPhone unlocking software available for bulk-buy
iPhoneSimFree software, which allows the iPhone to be unlocked for use on most GSM networks, will begin shipping this week, but individual iPhone users may wish to look elsewhere for a solution, as it won't be sold to the masses, but to bulk-buy customers.
It's likely that iPhone resellers will now spring up, grab a few hundred licenses for the software, and flog "free" iPhones to consumers who want to be untethered from AT&T.
Anyone going the non-AT&T route will have to forgo both visual voicemail and YouTube videos (apparently, though quite why these won't still work via a Wi-Fi connection isn't clear), but that could be a small price to pay.
Apple may take a dim view on the legality of this. Whether they pursue the software creators, or the individual resellers, remains to be seen, but you can be pretty sure there'll be some legal wranglings to come.
Licenses for the software start at $36 each for 50 licenses, down to $25 for 5,000 or more.
