iPhone web surfing accounts for nearly one in every thousand page views
OK, before you jump on that headline as misleading, let me explain — it sounds a lot better than "iPhone web surfing accounts for 90 in 10,000 page views".
Now, to the actual statistic. According to a recent web usage survey by Net Applications, showing browser (or perhaps more accurately, hardware platform/operating system) share, the iPhone accounts for 0.09% of all web browsing activity in the past quarter.
Of course, these statistics need to be taken fairly lightly, as there will be some sample error, but it's interesting to note that Windows CE devices, of which there are likely at least three times the number of devices, and which has been around for over a decade, gets only 0.06% share. Devices running the S60 operating system also get just 0.01%.
Assuming that these statistics are anywhere near reflective of the true situation, it shows that the iPhone's ease of use, coupled with an unlimited data plan, leaves other mobile devices far behind. And that's even with the possibility that a lot of this web surfing was done over slow EDGE connections, though we don't have any way of knowing that.
Overall, it shows that the mobile Internet is still very young and underdeveloped, but that if any model works to encourage people to use the web more, it's the iPhone model.
