Klausner Technologies suing Apple over iPhone's visual voicemail, screws up industry
Klausner Technologies has filed a lawsuit against Apple and AT&T, claiming that its founder, Judah Klausner, owns the rights to the technology. That's despite the fact that his company has no products on the market which utilise the advanced voicemail service.
Actually, it's an all out war against anyone who might be using similar technology to that which Klausner believes he owns, but Apple is surely the biggest fish he's got a chip on his shoulder about.
He's seeking $360m in damages and royalties from Apple and AT&T.
The CEO of a smaller company, SimulScribe, also being sued for alleged infringement, says that this will be one to watch. "If Apple wants to fight this, maybe we, as a small company, can sit it out, while Apple overturns it," says James Siminoff. "I have a feeling Apple doesn't think it's violating any patents."
He believes that the lawsuit will mean that visual voicemail technology won't make its way onto other handsets. "With this suit, everything in this space just came to a screeching halt. Not a single handset manufacturer is going to touch this stuff now."
If Apple and others are exonerated, the feature could wind up on other handsets.
