iPhone could get Palm OS applications via StyleTap emulator
Hands up who loves Palm OS applications? I certainly do, and the operating system is way up at the opposite end of the open-source scale compared to the iPhone.
Hoping to marry the two, though currently being cautious due to the lack of an official iPhone SDK comes StyleTap, a Palm OS emulator for the iPhone.
StyleTap is already available for Windows Mobile devices, and may well come to Symbian-based phones. The company has released a video showing a prototype of the software running on an iPhone, though founder Bob Chew is reticent about exactly when or how the application will find its way onto the iPhone:
"It looks promising," he said. "If Apple's security and application installation and distribution scheme isn't too restrictive, it looks like StyleTap will be able to run the same applications on the iPhone/Touch, Symbian, and Windows Mobile/CE platforms. With devices from Palm and those running ALP, this should go a long way in helping developers deal with the mobile OS fragmentation problem."
Plus, it would give iPhone users a huge library of software applications to choose from. Granted, they may not all look as flashy as native iPhone ones, given the reduced resolution for one thing, but if it comes down to usability and versatility, there's no contest.
