iPhone to get handwriting recognition capability?
A recent job advertisement posted by Apple has led to speculation that the iPhone could get handwriting recognition.
The call for a "Handwriting Recognition Engineer" to work full-time in Cupertino points to Apple developing some kind of new system, but whether it's something that will appear on the iPhone is another matter.
The successful candidate will be responsible for "advancing Apple's handwriting technology for Mac OS X" -- which shouldn't be difficult given that the current attempt is pretty shabby. However, it appears that "the recognition technology... may extend beyond Mac OS X to other applications and the iPhone".
Would handwriting recognition on an iPhone be anything worth shouting about? Writing freeform text with your finger? Might Apple need to bring out a special stylus for the iPhone, even though styli are, by their own admission, outdated?
More likely is that larger touchscreen tablet PCs are in the pipeline.
