Another quick consumer survey finds iPhone touchscreen keyboard lacking
It's not the first iPhone keyboard survey to be published, but it reaches similar conclusions -- use the iPhone for just a short amount of time and you'll find it harder to type on than a phone with a "standard" physical keyboard.
According to a consumer survey by Good Housekeeping magazine (US version), 11 new QWERTY phones retailing at under $300 were pitted against the iPhone's touchscreen.
Engineers, together with a general consumer panel, then tested how easy it was to text and place calls, as well as evaluating battery life and voice quality.
According to the results, users had a tough time learning to type properly using the on-screen keyboard, versus handsets that featured a physical keyboard.
It's not clear how much time users had to accustom themselves to the iPhone. I've had just as much trouble using a new computer keyboard (I'm only just getting the feel of my new notebook PC's keyboard, and getting up to a similar speed as my Mac's separate keyboard), and the fiddly keys on some tiny mobile phone keypads.
Given time, I think the failure rate would be lower, with more people warming to the iPhone's input. It's not for everyone, of course, but these surveys do tend to write off the slightly unconventional.
