Carphone Warehouse cuts £100 off 8GB iPhone price, speculating on 3G? O2 follows
Following last week's news that T-Mobile cut the price of the iPhone for those signing up to the most expensive monthly plan, The Carphone Warehouse has announced that it's knocking £100 off the price of the 8GB iPhone.
Being fairly generous, The Carphone Warehouse has said that anyone who bought an 8GB iPhone in the past 30 days can have a £100 voucher (not cash, mind).
In addition, customers only need to take out the minimum plan. While that's still a hefty £35 per month, CW hasn't forced a £45 or £75 per month contract on new customers.
There's been no news from either O2 or Apple at present. O2 has just announced the same deal. Presumably both companies are happy to lose out (or even pay Apple) on the cost of the initial handset in order to get a share of the revenue.
The price cut takes effect from tomorrow, Wednesday 16th April. Unfortunately, there was no announcement about a similar cut in price of the 16GB model, which continues to sell at £329.
Does this increase the likelihood that a 3G iPhone is coming very soon, or does CW/O2 simply want to boost flagging sales?
Chances are that, if you've not bought an iPhone by now, but wanted one and are holding out for a 3G model, this offer won't entice you. Still, it does make the cost of the lowest spec iPhone more attractive if you just couldn't stomach £269.
