iPhone's Wi-Fi positioning system easy to crack, researchers find
According to researchers at ETH Zurich, the iPhone's system of tracking its approximate position using data from nearby Wi-Fi access points can be easily hacked using readily available hardware.
Using an Asus EeePC and two jamming radios, the team were able to spoof the MAC addresses of known Wi-Fi hotspots, found by interrogating various online databases, and convinced an iPhone that it was located in New York City when in fact it was in Zurich.
Whether anyone would take advantage of this for malicious purposes is another matter, but it does reveal a weakness in the iPhone's method of positioning itself.
Hopefully a new version of the iPhone will have genuine GPS.
