Rumour: iPhone coming to Australia end of June, no contract required
The latest rumours surrounding an iPhone launch in Australia suggest that a 3G model could arrive sometime in the last week of June, and not be tied to any one carrier or require a contract.
A member of the Australian forum MacTalk claims that Apple has been giving approximate dates to resellers, preparing them for such a launch.
Having more than one network per country host the iPhone was never Apple's initial preference for the device, but it seems that they may have given up trying to convince a stubborn set of telecoms companies and will let them all have the iPhone. How this translates into revenue share agreements isn't clear.
And end-of-June launch may also tie in with the completion of the Sydney Apple Store, and gives a couple of weeks from the WWDC (when other countries may get the 3G iPhone) for shipping and other logistics.
