AT&T could heavily subsidise 3G iPhone
There's been a lot of talk about the reasons behind the current iPhone's price cut by some European operators, from simple tactics to drum up business, to a stock clearing exercise making way for a 3G model, to Apple pressurising operators to subsidise the iPhone.
Such a price cut never materialised in the US (since the first price cut, that is) but now there's speculation that AT&T could subsidise a 3G iPhone by as much as $200, believing that it could make up for the loss within a couple of months. That assumes people don't grab the phone and unlock it.
As there's no official word about a 3G iPhone yet, there's also no official price, but if it were to be priced around the same level as the current iPhone ($400) then to effectively slash the price in half would make it extremely attractive.
As always, we'll have to wait and see.
