Optus getting iPhone in Australia, but will it be delayed?
Though Vodafone has already announced its plans to sell the iPhone in Australia (amongst other countries), Apple seems to be continuing its new non-exclusive strategy by announcing that Optus will also be selling the iPhone.
An Apple spokesperson said the company is "excited to be working with SingTel, Globe and Optus to bring the iPhone to Australia later this year, and we can't wait to get this revolutionary phone in the hands of even more people around the world."
Robin Simpson, an analyst at Gartner, said he expected Telstra to make a similar announcement in due course.
"It was good having exclusive carriers for the first year," he said, "because we're talking about a vendor that's never been in the mobile phone market and the mobile phone market is totally controlled by operators in relation to distribution. So if they wanted to play they really had to do something attractive to the first operators who got involved, therefore [an] exclusive [deal] made sense."
Notice Apple is to "bring the iPhone to Australia later this year". Granted, June is "later this year" but I'm concerned there could be yet more delay before Australians get their hands on official stock. That wouldn't go down well.
