Pinch Media launches Analytics tool for iPhone developers
With official third-party iPhone applications coming very soon, developers are sure to want a way to track how many people have downloaded and are using their software, and a new startup company, Pinch Media, thinks it has a solution.
Its Pinch Analytics software is designed to integrate with Apple's iPhone SDK, providing how many unique visitors have downloaded and are actively using an application, how much time a user spends with the app, and geographical location.
It's not entirely clear how this functions, or how various privacy concerns will be overcome. Will the user of an application "fitted" with Analytics know that they're being tracked (albeit semi-anonymously), and will they have the option to turn off tracking?
I'd presume that third-party applications which make it into the iTunes Store (where official iPhone apps will be distributed) will have access to basic download/purchase statistics, but software that gives an indication of how popular an app is after it's been downloaded could be really useful to the developer.
Presumably, developers could find some way of implementing their own tracking system, by causing their application to "call home" each time it's connected to the Internet, but Pinch Analytics would simplify that process.
