iPhone's smartphone market share drops in first quarter of 2008
Research from IDC suggests that Apple's iPhone lost market share in the smartphone sector in the first quarter of this year, down to around 19% from 27% in the fourth quarter of 2007.
RIM's BlackBerry took significant market share, up to nearly 45% from 35%, which Palm got over 13%.
This doesn't give raw numbers for units sold by each manufacturer. though it would suggest that demand for the iPhone has been tailing off as the initial fervour for the handset dwindles, stock runs out, and high expectations of a 3G iPhone discourages consumers from buying the original models.
With new handsets expected from both RIM and Apple in the spring or summer, it will be interesting to see how market share changes in the next six months or so.
