iPhone Application Watch: Real Soccer 2009, Blog Press, Brain Tuner, iWalk, iSign
Real Soccer 2009
Demoed at the "Let's Rock" event, Gameloft's Real Soccer 2009 is a football arcade game reminiscent of EA's FIFA games, and featuring 198 teams with real player names, 3D graphics, 12 stadiums, accelerometer support, and virtual control pad.
Available for £5.99.
Blog Press
Another iPhone blogging application enters the App Store in the shape of Blog Press, which can be used to update multiple blog accounts across five of the major platforms: Blogger, Windows Live Spaces, WordPress, Movable Type, and TypePad.
It supports photo uploading from a Picasa Web Album or Blog Press Public Album, and presumably also from the iPhone's own photo album.
Blog Press supports WYSIWYG editing of text and photos, and automatically saves drafts in case of an incoming phone call.
It costs £5.99. Free applications are available if you only use the latest versions of WordPress or TypePad.
Brain Tuner
Brain Tuner is a free application which tests your mathematical abilities, so not as comprehensive as, say, Gameloft's Brain Challenge. However, this one does let you compare your score with others around the world, which is a nice touch. It's free, too, so you can't really go wrong and can easily zap it if it's not for you.
iWalk
iWalk is a pedometer for the iPhone and iPod touch, which can measure steps, distance travelled, calories burnt, and the like.
It will require a bit of fine tuning to get it to work with your particular walking/running style, and as with real pedometers it will probably work best when the phone is by the hip, though the developers claim it can be used in the hand too.
It also features dynamic sensitivity which will try to adapt its algorithm based on changes in your movement.
Music can be played in the background, but this app can't be minimised (just like any other app). Still, if you're only using it when walking, that shouldn't be a problem. It doesn't hook into GPS, either, which could provide some nice additional features, but then it's only £1.19.
I'd test it out with a regular pedometer and see how accurate it is for you.
iSign
iSign is a pretty nifty looking application that will show you how to sign 134 common words in sign language (the app doesn't say whether this is American or British Sign Language, though it's likely to be the former).
According to the developer, it was quite an intensive app to develop, as it relies on 3D modelling of a moving human. There's room for another 100 or so animations in the software, with users being asked for suggestions about what to update.
It may not get you signing fluently, but could put you well on the way and whet your appetite to learn more.
