iPhone Application Watch: Spreadsheet, Caliper, Trail Guru, Labyrinth Lite Edition, Wurdle
Spreadsheet
Simply titled, Spreadsheet from Softalk features 50 functions plus the ability to email spreadsheets created on the iPhone to a PC or Mac for opening on Microsoft's Excel 2003 or later.
Softalk CEO Simon Bates said: "The iPhone's popularity is growing rapidly as a business tool, particularly since iPhone 2.0 introduced Exchange compatibility, but up until now it has desperately lacked a spreadsheet application. We are glad to have been the first to have filled that gap."
Currently, it only allows exporting and not importing of sheets, which may prove to be irritating depending on how you use spreadsheets on the move. Reviews also suggest that the interface isn't at its best yet. These are all issues that could be fixed in subsequent updates.

Caliper
Here's a novel little application. Caliper will allow you to measure any item placed on the iPhone's screen by moving a set of virtual jaws around.
Obviously, it's not going to be as accurate as a dedicated pair of electronic callipers, but for everyday measurements of small objects, it's great. Because it only runs on the iPhone and the iPod Touch, you can be pretty confident that its onscreen measure is pretty accurate.

Trail Guru
Trail Guru is a free application that can track your position, distance travelled, pace, maximum speed, elevation, and so on, and then plot the results on Google Earth and Maps.
There's also a Trail Guru web site where trips can be compared with other users.
The downside is that the application must be active the whole time it's being used, but that's an iPhone issue, not unique to this app. Presumably, if a phone call comes in, the application will temporarily stop, potentially losing data, so if being used seriously, it's probably best to turn to Airplane mode. It's also quite battery-intensive.
The app is free.
Labyrinth Lite Edition
Labyrinth Lite Edition offers you the chance to play a classic wooden puzzle game, attempting to get the virtual steel ball around the maze in ten levels.
It's a free prelude to the full paid version which the developer obviously hopes you'll buy if you like this.
Wurdle
Wurdle is a Boggle-esque word puzzle game that lets you trace out words on a grid of letters.
Play on various size grids with different time limits, and with one of two dictionaries. High scores can be shared online.
Pretty addictive for anyone who likes word challenge puzzles. It's only a solo game at present.
