iPhone Application Watch: Brain Jogging, School of Rock, iProRecorder, Virtual Villagers: A New Home
Brain Jogging
The Brain Jogging application for the iPhone continues the popular genre of "brain training" games.
The feature set of many of these games is quite similar, so it's not surprising that it sounds rather like Gameloft's "Brain Challenge" -- it allows you to train up your response times and improve various mental abilities such as arithmetic, geometry, recall, and the like.
It includes three different difficulty levels and "comprehensive evaluation of every game played".

School of Rock
Paramount Digital Education has announced its iPhone application: School of Rock.
It teaches the basics of playing a variety of instruments through various "schools", including School of Drums, School of Keys, School of Guitar, and School of Bass.
Various challenges get the user to identify brand-name guitars and keyboards (not sure this aids in actually playing the instruments) and then provides instructions on such elements as melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo and beats. It also allows jamming sessions to be recorded and played back.
The application focuses on principles of music education and gives users the opportunity to experiment with playing musical instruments and songs. Working with a variety of authentic virtual instruments ranging from guitar, bass, piano and drums, users can learn to play tracks from legendary artists including Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Scorpions and Royal.
As the game progresses, the songs and variations become more challenging allowing players to master instruments, advance to different levels and accumulate points that eventually result in graduation from The School of Rock.
Available now for $6.99 (£3.99)
iProRecorder
iProRecorder is a "simple, professional audio recording" application which turns the iPhone into a portable audio capture device.
It features one-touch start, stop, and pausing of recordings, ability to append to previous recordings, pausing during interruptions (eg phone call), input level meters, record timer, geo-tagging, and adjustable recording quality including CD, radio, or dictation quality.
Playback features include fast-forward and rewinding, shuttle/jog wheel, playback meters, volume slider with volume boost, and playback speed/pitch control.
It can organise files by category, offers searching, email recording, and attachment of other media.
It will record up to 13 hours worth of audio per gigabyte of storage available, depending on the audio compression method used.
Initial reviews suggest that the application is rather buggy, but hopefully that will be improved with future versions.
Virtual Villagers: A New Home
Virtual Villagers: A New Home is Vivendi's casual game ported to the iPhone. This real-time simulation sees you guiding a castaway tribe and helping them to survive.
The game continues to update itself even when switched off (it doesn't run in the background, but updates over time), and encourages players to return daily. It features a variety of mini-games in the Sims genre.
