iPhone Application Watch: Google Earth, Grande Getter, Ralph Lauren, MewSeek
Google Earth
At long last, Google has made its popular Google Earth application available for the iPhone.
Those who care about politics and mind games between companies and their products might be amused that Google has launched an iPhone version of Earth before an Android version. However, that's not particularly surprising given that the iPhone platform has been available for a lot longer.
Anyway, the application is free (naturally), and makes good use of the multi-touch interface. It's one of those apps that will work a lot faster over Wi-Fi than a cellular connection, but that's OK. It's good that such a great desktop app has made it to the iPhone.
Grande Getter
I have little trouble finding a Starbucks. Despite the fact that some are closing down due to the current economic climate, there's bound to be at least one in each major conurbation.
Still, for those who don't have the patience to hunt around for their nearest Java fix (and who does when they've missed a caffeine fix?), there's Grande Getter.
The app finds the five nearest Starbucks to your current location. Really need five? Starbucks-crawl, I suppose.
It's free, too -- I wonder if developer Mark Wilson gets paid by the big S, or if Costa might also get a look in on a future update?
Ralph Lauren iPhone app
Lovers of Ralph Lauren style can now get a free application for their iPhone which allows the viewing of highlights from the Fall 2008 runway show, plus behind the scenes tours, advanced look at Spring 2009 show, and a short film: "Portraits of a Collection".
It doesn't do much more than that at present, but it is free.
MewSeek
There's something that just sits right about a P2P client only being available for the jailbroken iPhone. Whether Apple will ever sanction something that could be seen as a threat to iTunes revenue remains to be seen.
For now, MewSeek, by Eric Castro, is an experimental app that works, albeit unstably, and is based on SoulSeek. It also requires some other software to run, but if you're up for the challenge you can read more about it here.
