iPhone News: Flash on iPhone, NDA lifted, Nokia CEO admires iPhone devs
Latest iPhone News: Thursday 2nd October
Flash on iPhone
I've lost track of how many times Adobe has said that a version of Flash for the iPhone is imminent, but at the "Flash on the Beach" conference in Brighton (who thought up that title then, eh?), the company said that a version of its Flash Player could be released "in a very short time".
Of course, it's one thing to write an application for the iPhone, and quite another to get it past Apple. A number of applications have been refused entry to the App Store, or pulled soon after launching, because they failed one of Apple's strict entry criteria.
Even if a Flash application made it on to the iPhone, it wouldn't be integrated with the Safari web browser, which could limit its usefulness. It might be good for playing standalone Flash games, but not a lot else.
Steve Jobs has already gone on record to say that Flash is a resource hog, and isn't suitable for the iPhone, while Flash Lite "is not capable of being used with the web".
The tiny light at the end of the tunnel for Adobe is that Jobs says there's a "missing product in the middle". That would suggest that, if Adobe can come up with a web-friendly version of Flash that doesn't annihilate the battery, there may be a chance of it being accepted.
What would be ideal, though, is if Apple and Adobe could work together to integrate Flash into Safari, preferably with a user option to turn it on or off.
NDA lifted
The Non-Disclosure Agreement imposed upon iPhone developers by Apple has been lifted.
"The NDA has created too much of a burden on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the iPhone's success," said the company.
Some are suggesting that Google's Android platform could be a threat to the iPhone's success, and Apple is doing what it can to ensure that developing for the iPhone is as easy and fruitful as possible.

Nokia CEO admires iPhone
Just before Christmas last year, Nokia's CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, said that the iPhone "the first credible newcomer to the cellular market in years."
Now, he has said that he admires the people who made the iPhone happen.
"I'm the first one to note, before being asked, that Apple made a big favour to this industry to show the US and other consumers that this can be very exciting," he said at yesterday's Churchill Club event.
"Whether I like it or not, I definitely admire the people who make it happen," he continued. "I give Apple a lot of credit and thank Apple. They have done a service to the community. We have a credible competitor."
"For the time being, they're a niche player globally, but I need to take my hat off to them. It's well done. We need to be able to respond."
