iPhone Application Watch: iPhorest
Do something good for the environment while still using your beloved iPhone.
Yes, this one could put the bods at Greenpeace in a quandary. On the one hand, you've got an evil handset with (apparently) all sorts of horrible, environmentally unfriendly material in it. On the other, it's being used to run iPhorest, an app that could be helping to save trees.
Ecolife, in association with The Conservation Fund, lets you grow a virtual tree on your iPhone. For each virtual tree planted, The Conservation Fund will plant a real tree, starting with restoration of vulnerable wildlife habitats along the Gulf Coast in the United States.
What's in it for you, the user? Well, it's a bit of a social network for trees. You plant and nurture your tree, and you can share how it's doing with others users at any stage, or see where all the virtual trees are being grown.
There are a growing (haha, sorry) number of applications that aim to mix entertainment with an environmental cause. Think "Lil Green Patch" or "Lil Blue Cove" on Facebook.
