Rumour: Next-generation iPhone to launch in June
It's never long before an iPhone rumour surfaces again, and this time it's about a much sought-after update to the iPhone 3G.
According to speculation emanating from AT&T (Apple's exclusive mobile carrier in the US), the next iPhone could launch in June. That would sit very nicely with the updated software that's coming "this summer".
The word is that it will be much faster than the current iPhone 3G, which wouldn't be a huge surprise given that processors have moved on even in the last year. It will also tie in with AT&T's U-Verse service that lets users control their PVR via the iPhone. That's only really exciting if you're an AT&T customer using that service -- and even then it's not that exciting.
Apparently a faster connection - up to 7.2Mbps over 3G - are also being hinted at, though I would have thought that was more to do with the network than the phone, given that I thought the iPhone 3G was already capable of that theoretical 7.2Mbps. Perhaps I'm wrong.
It would be strange if Apple didn't release a new iPhone this year, really. Let's just hope that it isn't so much more advanced (nice though that would be at one level) that we get a two-tier App Store where some things won't work on the older phones. Sure, it's going to happen some time, but not just yet please Apple.
It'll also be interesting to see what form the new phone will take. Will it have a higher resolution screen? Might it also be launched with a range of Apple-approved hardware (which hopefully will also work on the existing iPhones). We'll have to wait and see -- it's probably a tad early to start queuing outside an Apple store.
