How to install and troubleshoot iPhone 3.0 OS on your iPhone
Apple has released the latest version of its iPhone operating system: version 3.0.
It's now available to download via iTunes. Assuming you have a legitimate (non jailbroken) iPhone, connect it via USB to iTunes, then click on "Check for Updates" (if it doesn't automatically do so).
You'll get a series of screenshots as follows (Windows version will look slightly different):
Click "Download and Install" to get straight on with the installation and update the iPhone:
Apple's server will be contacted:

Check the new features list then click "Next":
Agree to the SLA:
Download begins:
Click on "Downloads" in the left hand section of iTunes (under Store) and you'll see it downloading. It's around 230MB.
You might run into problems like this, which are likely caused by the entire iPhone-owning world attempting a downloading and activation at the same time:
If so, try again later, it will connect eventually.
This message means you're almost there:
Unfortunately, there may be a stumbling block:
When iTunes seems unable to connect up to the iPhone.
If this continues, my suggestion is to disconnect the iPhone's USB cable from the dock. The iPhone will then prompt for you to reconnect it. Do this and the iPhone should sync and then be usable.
(Disclaimer: At this stage, no data should be lost because iTunes has a complete backup of your iPhone, and the 3.0 software is fully installed - it's nothing to do with activation but with syncing back to your local copy of iTunes, as far as I can tell. However, be aware that you should have a solid backup, you MAY need to restore your iPhone, and the usual waiver of responsibility for wiping your iPhone after following this advice applies. I DO NOT recommend disconnecting/reconnecting DURING the earlier installation process as you COULD be left with an unusable device.)
Enjoy your new iPhone!
