Opinion: A call for better iPhone application security

Now that I've started adding applications to the iPhone in earnest, I'd quite like a way to secure them, plus core phone functionality, to stop malicious or unintentional misuse.

Of course, it's possible to lock the whole iPhone with a password, but suppose I want to allow a friend to play Bejeweled 2 or listen to some music, but don't want them to access my contacts book, call them up, add or remove notes, Twitter for me, delete or mess up an ongoing game of Aurora Feint, or a myriad of other things?

As far as I can tell, once you're in to the iPhone interface, you can pretty much do anything you like, unless an application has password or other security functionality built in.

iMarklet offers JavaScript cut and paste for iPhone

The new iPhone software is exciting, and of course we're all looking forward to 3G, GPS, a proper headphone jack... but what about cut and paste?

It seems that this oft-requested (and moaned about) feature could still be lacking from iPhone 2.0 software, and while iMarklet is not a complete, nor fully integrated, solution, it could at least provide some of the functionality iPhone users want.

iSkin launches Fuze iPhone protective case

iSkin has announced its Fuze protective skin for the iPhone, a lightweight, stylish case which complements the phone's aesthetics.

The case features a shock-absorbing soft inner layer and hard, impact-resistant polycarbonate exterior with a rubberised outer finish for enhanced grip. It also protects the dock port.

Available in "Titan" black with silver trim, it retails for just £20, which isn't at all bad for a protective case.

Use the Honlai QingBar MP101 to project that PowerPoint presentation, or BBC iPlayer, from your iPhone

Too bad that something with such a detailed name (the Honlai QingBar MP101) is just a concept at present.

If it was real, this product would allow you to project a 640x480 resolution image of between 15 and 27 inches from a connected iPhone.

With the new crop of software coming to the iPhone, including the ability to view Office and iWork documents, use the BBC iPlayer, as well as watching videos and web surfing, this could be quite a nifty method of sharing that content with a wider audience.

The resolution isn't going to blow anyone away, but it could be good for impromptu presentations.

iPhone could get add-on gaming control pad

With the iPhone increasingly being touted as a decent portable gaming device, some form of add-on control pad would be really cool.

The iControl pad features a standard set of buttons and a D-pad mounted on a unit plugs into the iPhone's dock connector and allows various aspects of the game play to be controlled from it. It doesn't mean that the accelerometer and touchscreen can't still be used to provide direct control of the games.

Developers would like to have test units available by July. Unfortunately, the demo video has been pulled from YouTube so we can't see it in action.
