Shock: MobileMe "not up to Apple's standards"

According to the head man himself, Mr Steve Jobs, MobileMe should not have been released when it was, and was "not up to Apple's standards". Not that the public has officially been told that, just Apple's staff.

MobileMe needed more testing to iron out the flaws, and it should have been rolled out slowly -- as in adding new features over time.

"It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store," he says. "We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence."

Enderle claims iPhone 3G launch like Vista

Rob Enderle, everyone's "love to hate" analyst, has suggested that Apple's iPhone "wasn't finished" much like Microsoft's Vista operating system.

"Clearly, Apple is having manufacturing and software problems," independent analyst Rob Enderle says. "A star product like the iPhone does a lot of great things for Apple, but when things go wrong, it can bring down the entire image of a company."

What I believe is more likely to have happened is that demand for the product was far higher than even Apple could have predicted. Though there have been problems with some of the software, it's sheer demand that is leading to hardware shortages and activation problems, and that's not all Apple's fault.

MobileMe officially available in the UK

Though the MobileMe service, which has been plagued with problems since it semi-launched earlier in the month alongside the iPhone 3G, is already live in the UK, Apple has just sent out an email to those who signed up for more information inviting them to take part in a free trial.

It's not clear why Apple has taken over two weeks to announce this to the masses, but volume of interest in the service could have something to do with it.

In any case, MobileMe is now available to trial in the UK.

Sub-par MobileMe experience leads Apple to drop "push" until it's fixed

In an interesting move, Apple has stated that it will no longer use the word "push" to describe the functionality of its MobileMe cross-platform synchronisation service.

Given some of the problems users have had with the new service since it launched last week, Apple has backtracked on its initial song and dance about the product. It's not entirely clear what word is going to be used instead, with Apple's apology note to some customers simply reading, "Even though things are indeed instantly pushed to and from your iPhone and the Web apps today, we are going to stop using the word 'push' until it is near-instant on PCs and Macs, too."

MobileMe service not yet active, Apple users in a flap

While it may not be the biggest problem for new iPhone 3G users, the unavailability of Apple's new MobileMe service is causing a number of problems for existing .Mac (dot Mac) users, who had their service turned off on Wednesday, on the understanding that the new service would be ready.

Although Apple had made the maintenance and downtime issues clear well in advance, that was little consolation to those relying on the service for mail and other services.

No news on when the $99 (£59) per year service will launch, though one would hope it will be before, or at least during, the weekend. If it works well, it will be one of the cherries on the icing of the iPhone, offering really good email and PDA functions across iPhone and multiple computers, for those not using enterprise software and Exchange.
