iPhone Dev Team close to making iPhone 3G hack public

According to reports online, the iPhone Dev Team could make hacks for jailbreaking the iPhone 3G public, thus continuing to piss off Apple and the mobile carriers, and potentially risking sanctions on future devices for those of us who just want to use the iPhone as it is.

A number of users want to do one or both of two things: break away from the authorised mobile networks (AT&T in the US, Rogers in Canada, O2 in the UK, etc) and run their own applications on the iPhone without having to via the App Store.

Tobias Wong creates limited edition matt black iPhone

Tobias Wong has designed the CITIZEN:Citizen ccPhone, an iPhone variant sporting a matt black back, custom screen artwork and icons, and a biannually-updated CITIZEN:Citizen personal address book presented in vCard format.

Apparently there's a lot of demand for a black iPhone, so if you want one, and you've got $2,000 to spare, you'll need to be quick as only 50 have been made.

Let's hope the unlocking that must've taken place in order to put custom icons onto the iPhone doesn't brick it, else that's a very expensive mistake.

Apps and cloud software - the future of business accounting?

Intuit have just released the MyBizTracker App for the iPhone which promises to keep you in touch with your business accounts whilst on the go. It is always welcome to see a useful app, especially one that is free and does not rely on any pre-purchased software, but what exactly does this app do and how does it represent the developments being made in the world of business?

The app has a simple display showing your business' finances and whether you are in the red or the black in real time. This means that your financial information is always kept up-to-date and you don't have to worry about what is happening to your cash whilst away from the office.

What does the app say about the world of business?

Intuit's app is a very simple idea but very effective and can be seen as a logical extension to their existing QuickBooks Online accounting software. This employs cloud computing technology for business use, enhancing various aspects of basic financial operations.

Cloud software has been positioned as a prime area of growth for businesses over recent years with an increasing number of services transferring their software to this virtual realm. There are numerous benefits to this and with such strong popularity, similar approaches towards other areas of business are expected to characterise the future of company dealings.

What does the app offer?

As with any app, it is never enough to simply do what it claims and MyBizTrack is as user friendly and functional as it is effective. It is set out in line with HMRC requirements so you can be confident that it is going to be reliable and do more than simply display basic information.

If you have a business and find yourself away from the office wondering exactly what is going on whilst you are away this really is worth trying out. It is absolutely free and is a completely stand-alone piece of software. Intuit have a record of making some of the best accounting software available inside the office and with this app they have proved their ability to transfer these skills outside of the office too.

Two native third-party applications created for iPhone, hackers claim

We reported on a "Hello World" iPhone application a couple of weeks ago, and now it seems that at least one other hack has successfully installed a native application on the iPhone.

One application, called "UIKit Hello World" may be the same one already reported on, and was created by developers at the iPhone Dev Wiki project.

Sandvox web design software updated to be iPhone-friendly

Karelia Software has updated its Sandvox visual web design software so that it's more iPhone friendly.

The developers say that their design templates have been updated to eliminate the extra margins that iPhone users see when visiting many standard websites.

Sandvox for Mac allows web pages to be created easily using drag and drop functionality, and comes with over forty design templates.

Vodafone customer claims to have iPhone working in UK

In the midst of Vodafone's 3G iPhone spiel, it's being rumoured that one of their customers has got an iPhone working on their network.

It allegedly works by activating the iPhone in the US using an AT&T prepaid SIM and the iASign tool, then putting the AT&T SIM card into an older UK phone (in the UK, of course), getting Vodafone to add the USIM number to his account, and then putting the AT&T SIM back into the iPhone.

This apparently allows everything except visual voicemail to work.

iPhoneDrive allows iPhone to be used as file storage device

iPhoneDrive is a piece of software that allows an iPhone to behave in much the same way as an iPod can - turning it into a portable file storage device.

Available for the Mac, it provides a desktop interface that allows users to move files back and forth between a Mac computer and the iPhone. It doesn't add any 'secret' functionality, though, so it's not possible to mess about with system and hidden files.

The software also allows the iPhone to be used as a makeshift USB thumb drive, utilising its built-in Flash memory.

iPhone web applications count approaches 200

According to the recently launched iPhoneAppr web site, there are now nearly 200 web applications available for the iPhone, ranging from games, to business and productivity, to news and sports widgets, to social networking and shopping apps.

Some of these are simply pared down web sites designed to be easily readable on the iPhone's 3.5 inch screen, while others make greater use of AJAX and Web 2.0 functionality built in to the Safari browser.

At present, the top applications include an assistant for the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, a tip calculator, chess, recipes, and a price comparison tool.

The site also features an iPhone interface which can be used to access the applications.
